New PC and Books

I have an iPad I use as an ereader. I've been adding epub books for years, most of them not obtained from the Apple store or originally with the pad. That is, I got them from Kobo or other sources, then used iTunes to add to the library on the Windows PC and sync to the pad.

Now I'm getting a new PC. The only books in my current iTunes Media folder are the handful I got with the iPad, not the ones originally downloaded to the PC and synced. I'm worried about how to start using the new PC. Will a sync backfill the PC library? I assume that's how those got there, but I'm uncertain.

It said something about everything being removed from the iPad. I'd hate to have to reload a bunch of books from the original epubs.

iTunes for Windows 12.7 (released in 2017) removed the app, ebook/iBooks, iTunes U, tones, and voice memo management features from iTunes. That and subsequent builds are able to manually drag some suitable media to the device, but it doesn't sync back to the library. Where this was supported it was generally with purchased content. Assuming you still have the computer with your library, or a backup, see Move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Community. There is also advice in the user tip should you need to reclaim your media from the device. As iTunes no longer syncs Books they should stay on the device when you set up syncing with a new media library, but if you are not able to transfer your old library then reclaim as much media from the device as possible before going down that path.
