What has happened to the download page for older macs

When that page was active, it never offered higher than 7.5.5, and the page has not been available for something like 10 years. As none of the responders here work for Apple, unfortunately we cannot tell you the rhyme nor reason behind any Apple action, good or bad.
The oldest OS version now available from Apple's download site in 10.7 "Lion," and it cannot run on any PowerPC Mac. Avoid any non-Apple site that claims to give you an installable version. Many come with adware or worse, and PowerPC Macs were not good about installing the OS from a burned optical disk.
