iMac G3 stuck at stopping indexing for multiple hours

yesterday night my iMac G3 did an automatic indexing of the systems drives. The eta started to climb to over 100 hours and beyond so I clicked stop. It switched to stopping indexing and I let it do that for about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Then I put the computer to sleep mode and went to bed. When I woke up I turned it back on and it continued to do the index stopping same as last night and has continued to just infinitely load that for 2 hours.
