Using Vision Pro as a standalone computer

I am considering purchasing vision pro, and was really surprised with the demo. However, I was repetitively told that it works as a standalone computer, and I want to know how true that is. Would there be any possible way for me to use it as a computer by hooking it up to an external monitor and not wearing it on my head all the time at home? I wouldn’t mind purchasing any apple product that makes this possible.

Thank you for your reply. If I understand this correctly, would that mean I could lay down my vision pro with a keyboard and mouse connected and control one of the windows by looking at it through airplay on a mac? Now that I think about that it would probably be similar to the in store demo iPad that was used to allow employees to see what I was seeing.

If you can afford to spend USD$3500 or more on what you seem to plan on using as an iPad—without using the equivalent of the iPad native user interface—have at.

Maybe try using an iPad the way you want via external keyboard and trackpad and AirPlay, and see how well that works?

Or re-visit the Apple Store and try using Vision Pro as you want, if the Apple Store will allow the added connections?

But you might well be very disappointed with your Vision Pro purchase. This is definitely not the use model Apple envisions.

Vision Pro is a standalone computer. That much is entirely is correct.

It is a standalone computer specifically meant and designed and optimized to be worn.

Vision Pro can mirror its display using AirPlay. Its supported accessory connections are limited to keyboards, trackpads, and game controllers

Vision Pro is not equipped with external I/O connections such as PCIe (Thunderbolt), DisplayPort, or USB-C (what is there is for charging only), and is not an appropriate choice for “dismounted” use with external peripherals such as displays.

You will likely be more interested in an iMac, Mac mini, or Mac Studio, among other choices from Apple, particularly if you want a standalone computer with external expansion capabilities.

For support of an external display, a display with support of AirPlay is required.

I think this whole idea of using Vision Pro as an iPad or whatever else and pretty much anything other than as a head-mounted computer using the native Vision Pro user interfaces, is a Really Bad Idea.

But this is your scheme, your budget, and your decision.

I would use it while wearing it. But my ultimate goal is to have one main computer, I would only require basic functions when not wearing it.

Usual approach within the Apple ecosystem involves one and variously more Apple devices—iPhone, Mac, iPad, Watch, Vision Pro, etc.—all sharing data via iCloud, and with each suited to the particular task or environment or limitations that the particular device(s) will be working within. Mac at the mid- to high-end, iPhone for wide portability, Watch for wearability, Vision Pro for VR/AR and immersive environments, etc.

I remain to be convinced that Vision Pro can fulfill the core computer role you envision, but that's your decision.
