M1 chip laptop NOT pairing with Vision Pro

I recently bought a vision pro, and one of the main reasons was to be able to utilize the virtual display functionality. I made sure I have the most recent OS, the same Apple ID, and restarted both the laptop and the vision pro. They are both on the same wifi and the bluetooth IS turned on for both. In the settings, I attempt to pair them because when I go to virtual display, the bar just keeps spinning and never stops. Upon attempting to pair, I get a dialog that says it is unsupported. This is an M1 chip laptop, I can't imagine that apple would require an m2 chip laptop for this functionality to work...very disappointed if that is the case.
