Can't change/remove apple id Iphone 6

My old Iphone 6 was using the same Apple id as my Iphone 13 Pro Max which was preventing me using contact photo. After some issues removing the id from my Iphone 6 I entered another of my email addresses to get the id off the phone. I now have my "proper" Apple id on my main Iphone 13.

The issue is that the email I entered on the Iphone 6 as an Apple id does not actually have an Apple id!

The phone now continually asks for me to login to Apple is using this email address.

I cannot change it, delete it or anything and have tried the following:

  • cannot reset the phone as need to enter id!
  • cannot create an id using that email as Apple will not allow it, says id not valid
  • same as above if I try to use my Ipad to reset the id
  • tried using third party reset tools for id but they do not work with "find my iphone" enabled and I cant turn that off without logging into the id!!!
  • Tried restoring from a previous save on my pc but can't do that without turning off Find my Iphone.....

The phone works ok and is unlocked etc. but keeps asking for id login and I cant update apps etc.

Please please read above before suggesting something I have already tried, thanks!

iPhone 6, iOS 12

OK for info after 1 hr 35 mins on phone to Apple support (the last 30 mins to a high level support person) the problem is resolved.

Essentially when I entered the new email address to update my Apple ID whilst that email address appeared as my Apple ID the actual ID remained as my original email address/ID.

This meant that although my phone continually asked for the password to id *****@gmail.com (which was never set up with a password) the password remained as the original one associated with the original ID.

No amount of resetting would work as the "new" email address did not appear associated with my ID except deep in Apple servers where it was set not to be used again and effectively blacklisted.

I know that sounds confusing and the very knowledgeable senior support person told me that the issue existed on old IOS versions but was corrected some 5 years ago. The original support person I spent an hour with would not have known about it hence her having to escalate to him.

"The issue is that the email I entered on the iPhone 6 as an Apple id does not actually have an Apple id!"

Somewhat circular statement and despite its confusing phrasing it is likely the source of the problem. To remove Find My you need the account information that was used to set it up. If you do not have it then the choices are to try to recover it, or to ask Apple to reset the device.

● Reset device if you can prove to Apple's satisfaction you are the owner:

Apple can completely reset a device if a person can provide sufficient evidence of valid ownership. This is done online* at: Activation Lock support request - https://al-support.apple.com/#/additional-support Apple says, "Proof of ownership documentation is required," but does not provide many details in the article as to what is acceptable proof. Prior to this official service Apple typically required the original receipt** issued by Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller and documented provenance (so typically it would be the first owner who does this, or a descendant with legal proof of ownership transfer). Note that while this will let you get use of the device again, it will not help you with lost access to an account.

Thanks for your comments but I am not sure why you can't understand this statement as I believe it's quite clear. After I cleared the original id I had to enter a new id but the phone/Apple does not appear to check if the email address you enter actually has an Apple id associated with it and doesn't need a password to enter it into the phone. I entered one of my email addresses and the phone allowed me to clear the Apple id that was common to my Iphone 13 which was what I wanted. The issue now is I cannot do anything on the phone to log into the Apple id because it doesn't exist. The phone keeps asking me to enter the password for email the email address I entered as the id but as I never created one there isn't a password!

As I mention above I can't actually create an ID online with that password as I get an error that the id is invalid. I can't clear the email address it displays - if I click the ? at the end of the password box to try to enter another email I get an error "Cannot verify identity - your action could not be completed due to a server error" every time.

None of the below solutions work as you need the id password.....which doesn't exist!

The phone is nearly 10 years old and I bought it when working for a company so although may be able to locate an old archived email do not have a copy of the receipt so don't believe I can prove purchase even though I have IMEI etc. for the bottom solution to reset the phone, which I don't mind doing as I can restore from a backup anyway.

I am having problems following this, primarily because an Apple ID is an email address, so "does not appear to check if the email address you enter actually has an Apple id associated with it" doesn't really make sense to me.

To sign in on an iPhone you need both the email address that is the Apple account "ID" and you need the password. A phone cannot be set up or reset with just one. You need to know both. If you enter just an email address it will insist you also enter a password. If there's no account matching those it will result in an error.

I suggest you contact Apple and they may be able to better understand the issue.
