dell 2723qe monitors with Mac Studio, a pc and KVM

I will be getting a pc and Mac Studio soon at work. I have two 27" Dell 2723QE monitors with auto KVM switching. I have found the directions at Dell on how to correctly connect two computers to a single monitor.

Question: If I simply connect the second monitor to the Mac Studio will this play nice with the Dell setup? I will also be inquiring with Dell today about this. TIA

You should have no problems with general usage, I used a similar setup with my Dell 3422DW monitors and they worked well with both my PC and Studio. The one thing that was annoying is when either machine went to sleep and shout down the video port the monitors would automatically switch to the other input, if the other machine was active it would auto detect the 2nd monitor and extend the desktop - both the Studio and the PC did this. While on the surface this seems like a good and useful feature, it wasn't. When I would go back to the first machine I would have to manually switch the monitor input back.

The workaround I came up with was to program the buttons on the bottom of the monitor (yours has a joystick on the back) to switch the input with a single touch.

Fast forward 2 months, I replaced my home office desk with a larger one, added a 3rd 3422DW, and now have 2 dedicated 3422DWs on the Studio and a 3422DW and a 2721 on the PC. It's a lot of real estate to work with but I'm editing video on both machines and not having to switch machines for one or both monitors frequently works much better.

Under Windoze, when specifying the resolution for a display, users often use a "Driver" side-loaded from somewhere else. That bolus of information is NOT a Driver in the traditional snnse, it is merely a Profile of the capabilities of the display.

The Mac uses a system that reminds me of “Plug and play” to determine what display is connected, and what its capabilities are.

To get a Mac display to become active, you need the Mac to query the display, and the display to answer with its name and capabilities. Otherwise, the display will not be shown as present, and no data will be sent to the display. "No signal detected" is generated by the DISPLAY, not by the Mac.

This query is only sent at certain times:

• at startup

• at wake from sleep — so momentarily sleeping and waking your Mac may work

• at insertion of the Mac-end of the display-cable, provided everything on that cable is ready-to-go

• hold the Option key while you click on the (Detect Display) button that will appear in Displays preferences (from another display)

so try doing some of those things and see if the display comes alive.

Modern Displays with multiple ports are sometimes busy scanning the other ports, looking for an input, and miss the query from the Mac. They need to pay attention to the port you are actually using, or they will miss the query.

Some displays have On-Screen Display settings that can be used to tell the display a computer is attached on a certain port, or a certain port should be highest priority. Changing those may make your display more responsive.

Some displays include their own private "sleep" settings for the display alone. This can allow the display to enter its own sleep mode, on top of the Mac's not sending it data. A display that is sleeping on its own cannot respond to the Mac's query, and will stay dark.

If you cut off the display's ability to answer on the EDID data channel by switching it OUT at the KVM switch, the Mac can not get the required 'Profile' and that display will remain dark.
