I have a very old iMac (2008) that no longer accepts my iPhone or iPad

Until recently, I could plug in my iPhone 12 Pro or my new iPad Pro and sync iTunes and download photos from these devices to the iMac. My iMac is very old (2008) and the latest iOS version is El Capitan because Apple stopped supporting and updating my device in 2015. When I plug my iPhone or iPad into the iMac, I get a message that

an update needs to be downloaded first. But when I attempt to download this update I get a message that it is unavailable. I can no longer sync my iPhone or iPad. Is there a fix for this?
