I just want the song not apple music

I can't buy the album online anywhere. I look up the artist in itunes and the particular track. I want to pay for the track not the subscription. I pay for all the music I buy. I see the song is available to apple music but not for single purchase in itunes. I just want the song but not apple music. Why can't I just buy the song?

It is up to the publisher/owner of the song to what platforms they use. Most songs are available on both iTunes for purchasing and Apple Music for streaming, but I have seen cases where the owner of the songs only wanted them purchased and not streamed, so in your case they chose streaming and not purchasing.

This has more to do with how owners get paid for their songs and the rules set up by the Music Industry for paying royalties. To download a song it is called a Mechanical royalty and the song must have a copyright first to obtain those royalties. Streaming is called a Performance royalty and paid at a different rate. For a little background on the process you can read this:

At any rate, you should contact the publisher/owner of the song for an explanation on why they are only choosing the streaming platform. The method they choose is up to them and Apple just provides the platforms for them to use.

It is a frustrating situation. I have the same issue, but in many cases it's simply a matter of finding the retailer that sells the track. You would think that would be easy...

  • Amazon. Look for the track on Amazon. The UK service appears to be as follows:
    • once you find it or the album, you may need to select the Audio CD option
    • then tap the MP3 option listed under See all formats and editions. This will open up their Amazon Music option.
    • if you tap on Play the album or a track, it will play it but then try to get you into their monthly subscription service. Ignore that and...
    • tap the Purchase options drop-down and select MP3 Download. Now you can select the one track you want
  • Bandcamp: The procedure here is much easier, once you find the artist or album (not always that easy). You see the song listed, hover your mouse over the track title line and tap the Buy Track text that appears. Not all artists, especially major artists, are sold on Bandcamp

Why is it so difficult? Well, without stating the obvious, it leaves those of us who want to have their own copy of music (because I've been buying it for over 50 years) in a frustrating position. It seems to be the modern way. Yesterday, I bought something from a tool merchant. The assistant asked me if I had come from the tool merchant outlet across the road, which I had. He told me that they get a lot of customers who had been to the other shop first.

Am I the only one who can see the problem with this?

Out of interest, what is the song you're after. (If you prefer not to tell us, that's fine. You have a right to privacy.)
