I have an iPhone 8 ( 16.7.1) and series 8 watch ( 9.6.3). The phone has the latest update. However when I go to update the watch it says I need to update my iPhone first. I have powered off and restarted both devices several times. Both on the same wifi. Bluetooth on. Both fully charged on chargers. I have unpaired and paired the watch. Still will not update. Any solutions out there?
perhaps my phone is to old???

An iPhone 8 is too old for that. It's not possible to update a watch to 10 from an unit incapable of 17; if you update it from a compatible one or independently, you won't be able to pair it with that iPhone afterwards.

Same issue here, both my wife and I. I have an 11 Pro and she has a 13 pro max (16.7.1) and we both have Apple Watch series 8s (9.6.3).
Neil, another couple have the 11 and 13, both capable of IOS 17. Series 8 watches.

Installing 10 from either of your iPhones requires updating the unit to 17.
