Hi Sam Brennan,
If you have your Auto-Lock Setting set to anything other than Never under Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock and the iPad stays on while using the Kindle app, there might be a setting for the Kindle app. Since this is an Amazon app, please reach out to their support as they would be able to guide you with more accuracy while using the Kindle app: Kindle E-Reader Help - Amazon Customer Service
