Apple Cash disappeared. Balance Adjustment to $0.

Per Apple support call and then a call with their Apple Cash controller - Green Dot. Apple confiscates all funds in Apple cash if Apple cash is not used for a period of time without notice or explanation - just says "Balance Adjustment". The unused Apple Cash is considered "Abandoned". It will eventually be turned over to the state of residence. Filling out forms soon enough will get funds back in 6-8 weeks. If not soon enough, then deal with state to get funds back. In theory, letter of funds confiscation is "in the mail" - I am assuming with forms.

There should have been a warning.

I have a similar issue. First when I setup Apple Pay, I earned rewards points of $61 and suddenly it disappeared on the main screen on the iphone13. I went along and figured it was buried in the menus and would look later when I needed the money.

Today, I seen this thread when looking for my rewards. so I could see how much I had as the balance disappeared from the wallet, and there was no entries of money being taken out.

I noticed Apple Cash said to be setup and apple savings need setup. So I googled them and Apple Cash was for instant use and saving was a savings account with 4.15% interest.

I just wanted cash. history said I had $204 total, so I setup Apple Cash and it reported I had only $94 and never spent any of it as I was saving up for an Apple product. But over half of it is gone?!

Just how often does this get reset to zero? I would think I would get a notification of this happening.

I didn't realize the Apple Cash, was going to be anything other than a rewards system. not treated as a debit card that will milk out your money continuously.

No reference to abandoned or inactivity timeframe in Apple Cash Terms and conditions.

Wallet

Click on Apple Cash

Inside circle with dots upper right, select "Card Details".

Bottom of Card Details is a link to "Terms and Conditions"

The only "inactivity" reference is $0 fee for inactivity.

No reference to abandoned or inactivity timeframe.

Impressive credentials Jeff! I don't think I made my point. This is not against the abandoned funds state and federal laws applicable to prepaid debit cards or GreenDot. It is against lack of Apple communications.

Money should not disappear from my account without telling me and then masking the withdrawal and description. Apple Cash actually being a GreenDot prepaid debit card controlled by state and federal laws was also not self evident. I expected more up-front information from Apple. "Buyer beware" never entered my idea of dealing with Apple. I should not need to review state and federal prepaid debit card laws to deal with Apple, (Terms and Conditions would not have helped), and even if I did, the "abandoned" money withdrawal process should not happen behind my back. That is the issue. The hidden process is just slimy.

If I was told in advance my account was suffering from inactivity, I would have taken steps.

If I was told the money was taken because it was abandoned, and the steps I need to take to correct, that is frustrating, but I still move forward.

I accidentally found the money was gone when I was adding an additional card. That hidden process is the issue. Just found the money was gone.

As explained in the marketing materials for Apple Card, Apple Cash and Apple Pay, you receive cash. It’s not points or some kind of convertible token etc. The funds are deposited into an Apple Cash account issued and serviced by Green Dot Bank. A virtual prepaid debit card on the VISA network is used for payment, transfers and transactions. The virtual card is accessible via Apple Wallet on iPhone and iPad.

Have you requested a statement from Green Dot? If not, please reach out the an Apple Cash specialist.

Actually, I have an MBA. Sorry.

This is an issue of funds being confiscated without warning, explanation, and inactivity and abandonment not referenced in any way in Apple Cash Terms and Conditions other than to indicate $0 charge.

To be better informed in the future, you should first read Apple's own Apple Cash Terms and Conditions link on the Apple Cash details page. I put details of how to get there in another post.

Basically, this is not a problem with what should be done with abandoned funds , which is what I think your banking regulation is referencing. This is an issue about communication - no warning, no explanation, no reference in Terms and Conditions - for an Apple Wallet with bank links used multiple times a month for many many years.

The problem was found. Apple is refunding money. Even though I had used ApplePay every day with each charge automatically paid immediately by my bank checking, I had excess cash sitting in the Apple pay account paid to me years ago (years is key here). I left it there for emergencies - like having some cash folded tucked in a wallet - ahhh leave it in your wallet. The ApplePay Agreement said "no fees" for any of the uses I used (yeah, I actually read the agreements - a sickness). To my surprise, the cash sitting in ApplePay was TAKEN due to "INACTIVITY". All the money there was taken, because it sat idle too long. This took a lot of phone calls to determine. The issues I had were no warning or email - I would have just transferred it to my bank, the charge was just labeled "Adjustment" so I had no idea why it went away. Combined with no mention of this fee in the agreement that I agreed to. It was just slimy. Months later and tons of paperwork, I am still waiting for the refund. I'll sure I'll get it, but not holding my breath in the mean time. Apple has changed their ApplePay user Agreement. You and everyone else using ApplePay was notified when that happened. No one noticed or cared. But now someone else will know why their ApplePay cash disappeared called "ADJUSTMENT". If it does, call and complain, and it will be resolved.

You were not completely informed. Banks just can’t take funds as you allege. What actually happened was due to inactivity, your account was declared dormant and your state laws require that dormant funds be turned over to the state of your residence as recorded by the bank. You can file a claim with the Secretary of State (free process and most states permit claimants to do it online) and in several months, maybe less, your state will return the funds.

Aug 12, 2024 2:55 PM in response to Jeff Donald

It is not the State rules about dormant funds that I have a problem with. It is everything up to that point that Apple controls. 1) I was not informed. Apple pay was used almost everyday for transactions, with receipt emails that I received within minutes (impressive indeed). Yet, no information/emails that the excess cash was not part of a very active account, and no information that the excess funds were at risk of being seen as "dormant", (something that is known by Apple/Apple-controlled-representative, or it would not be reported to the State). That warning along with an excerpt from the ApplePay agreement that describes that rule along with a pointer to the section. That is the type of Apple-way, completeness, and professionalism I have come to expect and use as a standard for all the other companies I deal with day to day. 2) Hidden description of withdrawal: "Adjustment". Again, an Apple communication issue that could have just as easily said exactly what happened (should not have gotten to this point, but...), like "Adjustment due to inactivity" along with links and procedures to resolve. These is/was the professionalism I would have expected from Apple. And after the fact, once the poor communication was identified, the entire process of just sending emails with information and changing the charge description should have happened immediately. Nope. Some words were changed in the ApplePay user agreement.

Here is the specific part of the Apple Cash Terms and Conditions that you failed to read or comprehend.

>>If Your Apple Cash Account Becomes Inactive. We may transfer, also known as escheat, funds in your Apple Cash Balance to the appropriate state if no activity occurs on your Apple Cash Account or if you fail to communicate with us regarding your Apple Cash Account within the time period specified by state law.<<

It seems to me that the completeness and professionalism you expect was fully disclosed. In case you have questions regarding the above passage, it’s in the pdf I downloaded back in 2019 when I setup my Apple Cash account. So, not sure what your unfounded allegation regarding words changed in the Terms and Conditions.

Another point in fact, there is no such thing as >>Apple -controlled-representative<<. Green is a bank, governed by multiple federal and state agencies. Thinking a bank kowtows to anyone entity is just lacking in any foundation. Banks are separate entities and obey federal and state laws, as specified in the terms and conditions.

Welcome to the financial world where banks and other financial institutions follow state and federal laws. Nothing more or nothing less. Apple has no part in this due to privacy laws and regulations.

I don’t mean to sound harsh. But it sounds like you don’t have a good background or education in finances. Don’t rely on YouTube or a Google search to educate you. Have a relationship with a local bank and take to a bank official. They spend time with you and teach you about personal finances.

You don’t know, what you don’t know. This is true for everyone here. Thank you for proving the Dunning — Kruger effect.

Having an MBA degree is a great accomplishment and you are to be congratulated. Personally I only have a Bachelor of Science. But I was licensed Series 6 & 7, licensed to sell life and health insurance and a CLU, CFP. I’m retired now.

Reading terms and conditions are the very first thing I do when contemplating a change in my financial situation. There are the facts. Beyond that talk to your insurance agent or CPA. They could have told you about abandoned funds. Even Google searches will reveal your state laws etc. In my opinion, singling out Green Dot or any other party is disingenuous. You’re the one that climbed into bed with Green Dot.
