Which way should I actually reset SMC?

Hello there!

I use 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro. I need to reset SMC and I'm confused, because different websites give different methods. I tried multiple solutions:

  • holding power button for 10 seconds;
  • holding Left Shift + Left Option + Left Control keys;
  • holding Right Shift + Left Option + Left Control keys;

Which of those methods is actually correct? And should I unplug my charger to reset SMC?

  1. Shut down the Mac.
  2. Connect your power adapter to your Mac and to a power source.
  3. With the Mac still powered off, press Shift-Control-Option and press the power button at the same time.
  4. Hold them for 10 seconds
  5. Release all keys and power up your Mac.

And ... why do you think you need to reset the SMC?

Here is an Apple article with instructions for the SMC Reset:

Reset the SMC of your Mac - Apple Support

You are very close with the third option from your original post. For a 2018+ Apple Intel laptop you must first press & hold the Left Control + Left Option + Right Shift keys for seven seconds, then press the power button making sure to hold everything for another 7 seconds.
