If the plug gets jostled at all, it often stops charging. If I unplug it and replug it, it often fails to connect. (I am basically treating it as a desktop at this point). Can the charging port be repaired without replacing the motherboard?.

Yes, we have tried more than one different cable. I was afraid I had to take it to an Apple Store, but I just don't know if it will be worth it given the age of the machine and the nature of the problem. I wish there was someone I could ask over the phone or via chat.
There is: Official Apple Support. Both phone and chat support are available, and they can arrange to have your Mac inspected if necessary.
