Wireless charging

I have an iPhone 12 and am trying to charge it wirelessly. Should it work automatically or do I need to switch on wireless charging on the phone? I’ve seen references to activating wireless charging through Settings>Accessibility or Control Centre but I can’t view the menu options they say I should.
