Remote TV app on my iphone keeps disconnecting with my apple tv

remote app apple tv in control center on my phone keeps disconnecting from apple tv. I have to restart my phone, sometimes multiple times, for the remote app to connect again. My phone and apple tv are up to date with the software. Started happening a couple of months ago.

Standard response for every problem on this forum is to talk in circles until everyone is exhausted. The AppleTV remote in Control Center was corrupted in a fairly recent update. I have to keep restarting my iPhone to reconnect remote control function. Often the remote buttons will work but not the touch pad so I am unable to navigate. The reliability of all Apple Firmware is on a downward spiral and is just going to keep getting worse.

It didn't work. In fact, sometimes I have to restart my phone 2 or 3 times before it reconnects. I was hoping to avoid buying a new remote...what is the point of having this feature on the phone then if it doesn't work properly?


Also I'd like to point out my phone remote was working fine until only a few months ago...and nothing had changed with my internet, other devices, etc.

This is exactly my issue as well! My appleTV 4k and iphone 14 pro (both me and my wife) built with in iphone remote have been randomly and often disconnecting from the appleTV. Nothing on the network has changed.


The Apple TV remote via control center partially works. The play/pause, menu, and TV buttons all work fine…


…also But the swipe gestures do not.


I also had to go into accessibility settings and enable directional buttons. It’s super frustrating, and I cannot figure out a reliable solution to it.


the fact that this is happening for so many people, and for both me and my wife, seems like this is a recent firmware update glitch on iphone or appleTV.

Forget about any recommendations to reboot or to configure your network to their requirements. It's not the problem and it's a canned response to every issue.


If you are on a flat network. meaning one SSID & VLAN, your issue is likely strength of wifi signal. Use a wifi scanner to find weak spots in your area and add AP's as needed. Sitting next to your Apple TV with your phone is not a test. Both the Apple TV and the iOS device need to be in an area with strong wifi signal.


If you are like me and you put all your IOT and apple products in a DMZ. no access to the internet for everything. apple products need 443 just to be able to stream. mDNS is needed for communication to the IOS devices in the other secure vlan for controlling the devices with your phone.


When you introduce a network like this you may experience the remote disconnecting due to mDNS issues. restart the mDNS service and that should resolve the issue.

An issue like this could be network related. Please start by making sure to have the suggested network settings enabled for your router and modem: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points - Apple Support


It would also be a good idea to identify and remove any sources that could cause wireless interference: Resolve Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues caused by wireless interference - Apple Support


Please restart both devices before testing again and report back if you continue to notice a problem.

Hi joselito74,


If you go to Settings > Bluetooth on your iPhone, do you have other Bluetooth devices listed?

If so, perhaps another Bluetooth device is interrupting by trying to reconnect.

You can try to unpair the other devices, by using the "i" > Forget this device.

Test if the issue still happens, then if not, you can pair again.


If it no longer happens, we'd suggest to get a replacement Apple TV remote, to avoid using your iPhone as the remote. This page has links to identify which remote, and then how to buy a new one.
