Wondering what happens when you try, which iOS version is installed on your iPhone, whether Messages has been working ok before, and whether or not you get an error message that would help troubleshoot.

What is an "SMS unlock"? Do you mean they should ask their carrier to make sure SMS is enabled on their account?

Also, iMessage not only needs SMS active, it needs international SMS enabled.

It is not easy to guess what you require.

Which Mac model, or device model and OS version are you using ?

What happens when you try to use messages ... eg: can you log-in ok or not ... else is there an error message if you try to send.

What have you already tried ... eg: have you tried restarting / followed any / all / of the links provided above.
