Apple TV Default Audio

Is there a way to select multiple HomePod speakers as the default audio for Apple TV? I only see an option to select just one HomePod speaker as default although it allows for multiple as temporary. Problem is that you have to change it every time if you want to use multiple speakers when viewing since it’s only temporary. It’s a bit annoying. Am I overlooking something as it seems to make sense to me to have that as an option?

It’s one or one stereo pair. Often times the temporary will stick if they were last used in a group that way though.

  • You don’t need to go into Settings, you can Press and hold the TV  button on the Siri Remote to open Control Center, then select the Audio Controls button .

You’re welcome.

I should mention pointing the remote at a HomePod only works when the ATV4k has HomePods set as default audio and playback had begun with these particular HomePods alone or when they are playing with others. So in your set up you can aim it at the temp one. You’ll figure it out. ”Hey Siri” can be disabled via the Home App or by asking it to “stop listening”

Change HomePod settings - Apple Support

Thank you! I did notice that I didn’t have to change the output to include the other speakers this time. I was trying to set a HomePod and two HomePod Minis as the default output. I have to either select the HomePod or the HomePod Minis that I have set as a stereo pair. I was trying to accomplish surround sound with the three. I appreciate the tip using the home button. That reduces the number of steps to set my desired output.

Thanks again!

Correct, you can’t do what you’re hoping to do with all three. Your best bet might be to use the paired minis as the default for the best home theatre sound and add in the big HomePod in control centre (or the temp setting) which would act as a sound/bass booster. I do that with one of my rooms and it sounds pretty good. It also sticks every time I go to use it - most of the time. Place the minis on either side of your tv and place the HomePod where it suits. The back of the room might be good. Using control centre allows you to add as many temps as you like. If you have others, that is. Once you’ve set the volume level for each and exit control Center, the Siri Remote will act as a master volume for all. You can also point the remote at any HomePod to control volume (on all) as well.

If using “hey siri” gets confusing, you can disable on one (or the pair) or change the voice so you know which is responding.

Enjoy!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I think I’m on a roll now. I had my Minis set up as the temporary output but will switch them to the default now. It just makes sense. And the sound from all three is amazing.

I didn’t know about setting the volume level for each speaker. Nor did I know that I could point the remote at any HomePod to control volume as well as disable “Hey Siri”. I will be playing around with that this morning!

I appreciate all of your help. I was pulling my hair out trying to figure this out. Just kidding but it was annoying as heck! Thanks again!!!! 😊
