Unable to open a calendar event

I'm unable to double-click or otherwise open calendar events on my Macbook Air. This is also true for double-clicking .ics files. Nothing happens. The only thing that works is to quit iCal and then re-open. Opening events will work for one or two, then stops working again until I restart the program. It's very annoying.

I'm also unable to right click on the event to change details, such as calendar colors. It will work for a bit, but then I'll need to restart to make iCal responsive again.

Any thoughts please?

Is Safari set as the default browser...? I would try that.
