Music doesn't increment play count / last played for the last song of a playlist / album

It seems in the Ventura update the the music app no longer marks the last song of a playlist as played when it's completed. I have several smart playlists that are based on the last played date, and once the final song is played in them it remains in the list. Even if I play it again it remains. It seems any playlist where there is only one song will not mark the song as played when it's played. This is very frustrating.

How can this be fixed?

This doesn't work in Ventura 13.4 (22F66), Music version 1.3.5.8.

Still and issue in December on Sonoma 14.1 and a new iMac. It is also an issue with albums and not only playlists - seems to be any case where something is the "last song". I use play counts obsessively so this issue really gets to me. I reported the bug as well.

This affects all my playlists, no matter if the music is downloaded or imported from a CD, etc. The work around I'm using is 1) create an audio file (mp3, aiff, m4a, doesn't matter) with 1 second of silence. 2) add that to the end of each playlist.

Ridiculous to have to do this, but it works. You can copy it (cmd-c) and just add it to each playlist with cmd-v.

I suggest that everyone who notices this problem report the bug: Feedback - macOS - Apple

Apple probably won't bother to fix it, but maybe if hundreds of people report it, someone at Apple will notice and get it fixed.

won't fix your problem, but the counts will be right.

I have had the same issue for a while now. I have several playlists that depend on the "last played" field to populate the list; after each song is played, it removes itself from the list when its "last played" field is updated. But, when the list reaches the last song, it plays the song but it does not increase the "plays" field and the "last played" field's value does not change.

I wish I could say for certain when this problem began, but—for me—this has been around for a long time now—well before 13.4. It may even predate Ventura for me.

I'm currently running 13.4 and Music 1.3.5.8 on an 14" M1 MBP.
