Also I would like to use an external cd drive , would anyone know which one would be compatible, if any?
Apple sells a USB SuperDrive but it has not been updated since Summer 2012 (!). We see a lot of reports of issues with them on newer Macs. Usually, they cannot be routed through a hub.
Were I shopping for an external optical drive, I would go for this one:

It is faster (USB3, not USB2 like the elderly SuperDrive), a newer design, is self-powered, has faster access rates, and costs about the same as the SuperDrive. The other advantage is the cabling.
On a SuperDrive the cable is both power and data, and is integral with the drive body. If your puppy or cat chews through the cable, you need a new drive. Period. The OWC uses detachable power and data cables so, if either is damaged, they can be economically replaced without your sending another device to the landfill.
Your computer has regular USB3 ports as well as Thunderbolt ports. You should be able to attach an older USB board without adapters. Note the some advanced f-key function of current macOS versiosn may not be available to an older board, but the basics for all typing tasks are there.
