27" Late 2015 iMac - Wifi Radio Issue

Hi all,

I have a 27" Late 2015 iMac. It has been working great.

I connect the computer to my LAN using ethernet cable vs wifi, but from time to time I would connect it to wifi to do airdrop or few other things. It has been several months now (i.e., Jan 2023) where I notice that when I turned on the wifi switch, it doesn't pickup any wifi (see attache image). Usually there are at least 20 wifi's from my neighbors and mine.

I restarted the computer and it didn't resolve anything. I ran the diagnostic test (i.e., reboot and holding the D key) and it says that everything is fine. I ran the wireless diagnostic and it says that I need to turn on my wifi.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

N

Delete these files & restart...

~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.pia.pia_manager.plist

/Library/LaunchAgents/com.malwarebytes.mbam.frontend.agent.plist

/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.paloaltonetworks.gp.pangpsd.plist

/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.malwarebytes.mbam.rtprotection.daemon.plist

/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.fitbit.galileod.plist

~ tilde indicates your user library folder

Apple hid the Users' Library folders...

Method 1:

1 From the Finder, select the Go menu at top of the screen, and choose Go to Folder.

2 In the window that opens, enter ~/Library, and click Go.

This Mac is filled with what can be problematic stuff.

Profiles, multiple security add-ons, management add-ons, and a modified hosts file, etc.

Based on a quick look, Jamf, Defender, Malware Bytes, Protec, Little Snitch, a very old version of Paragon, PA globalprotect, a torrent client, PIA and Nord VPNs, etc. And that modified hosts file, too.

Torrents are among the better sources of malware for macOS too, as cracked apps have lately been targeting their own users with malware. I’ll assume there are no cracked apps here, but any that might happen to somehow exist here should go away. Whatever damage and data uploads have happened here have already happened.

I’d back up, erase this, install macOS, migrate over (just) files and documents (and not apps), and be a little more… economical about what gets installed and from where, and more economical with what gets modified.

Thank you for the report, your system is kind of a mess due to what you have installed on it. For example, please uninstall:

  • LittleSnitch, outdated and totally irrelevant.
Microsoft Defender Endpoint Security Extension - version 101.97.94

I also suspect you have downloaded and installed some malware including adware. Please download the free version of malwarebytes and run it. Then restart in Safe Mode.

Finally, there is zero evidence you backup your computer. Operating any computer without a backup plan is a 100% guarantee of losing data, data that cannot be retrieved including photos, important financial info, etc. At the very least you should be using Time Machine ( Back up your Mac with Time Machine ) which will require an external HD such as an OWC Mercury Elite Pro. This should be your #1 priority as a 2015 computer is 8 years old and could fail at any time.

Also, please when posting reports such as an EtreCheck report, please save them to your Desktop. You put it out on the Internet somewhere, possibly some Cloud storage. That means we have to download it from that location which is slow.

Thank you for your input.

Actually, I had been thinking to reinstall the OS from scratch. Hopefully, Apple still provides the option.

As for the backup, I have had time machine running for years now on my files excluding the apps and OS though.

So, it is interesting that the report shows up as not backed up.

It is also interesting that it says that my LittleSnitch is outdated. It is at the latest version.

Similarly with MS Defender Endpoint Security Extension.

Could it possible that when I updated these software, somehow the installer didn't remove the old version or referenced to the old version?

I’m having the same trouble. Everything was working fine last week and I rearranged my room. Moved the 2015 iMac and now no networks appear in the WiFi? I tried resetting the PRAM and SMC but no dice? All other Apple devices see the network as normal. Any suggestions?

Please start your own thread, as this is quite possibly a different issue.
