iPhone 14 Pro Max charger 20W vs 5W

I've just bought an iPhone 14 Pro Max, and I have a doubt about the charging. I'm using an iPad 8 charger, which is 20W. I have always followed the recommendation that says it is optimal to keep the battery in a 20%-80% range. I usually plug the iPhone in when the battery reaches 50% and unplug it when the battery reaches 80%. However, during that short amount of time (usually less than one hour), the iPhone heats up a bit, even if it's in Low Power Mode and with all the apps closed.

On the other hand, when I use an iPhone 8 charger, which I think is 5W, it doesn't heat up at all, and it charges slower. I wonder if this situation is better for my iPhone since I only charge it from 50% to 80%, and I don't have any problems waiting longer.

So the question is, is it better to use a 5W charger that takes longer to charge and doesn't heat up the iPhone over using the 20W charger that charges it faster and heats it up? Is the iPhone 14 designed to be charged with a >5W charger, or is it fine to use it?

I'm asking this question because the device is brand new, and I thought it was not supposed to heat up even if I use a high-power charger. Just to be clear, it is not super hot; it just heats up a bit. But I'd like to take care of the battery now that it's at 100% capacity so that it lasts longer.

If you want to protect the battery for long life, there are 2 things that you must do:

1) Enable Optimized Battery Charging

2) Plug the phone into the charger and leave it connected all night.....every night

You are working from old advice. Here's the latest info from Apple and forum expert Lawrence Finch.

There is never a time when any smartphone is doing nothing, so it will use energy 24/7, and the amount used will vary from day to day and minute to minute. For that reason alone you should charge your phone overnight, every night. In addition, the absolute best way to get maximum use on a charge, as well as slow the decline of battery capacity long term is to enable Optimized Battery Charging (Settings/Battery/Battery Health) and charge the device overnight. The battery will fast charge to 80%, then pause. During the nighttime pause the phone will use mains power instead of battery power, allowing the battery to “rest”, and thus reducing the need to charge the battery quite as often. The phone will resume charging to reach 100% when you are ready to use your phone; it will “learn” your usage pattern. If you enable iCloud Backup (Settings/[your name]/iCloud - iCloud Backup) the phone will back up overnight also, assuring that you can never lose more than the current day’s updates.
