Safari shuts down

My mac is Big Sur with latest OSX and Safari (11.7.5). When I open Safari and type 'sa' in the address bar its OK. When I add an 'n' it shuts down. If I type 'abc' its OK. Wierd! I have to reboot my Mac to clear, then it works. If I open a Google search and type 'san' it works OK. Have not tried other combinations.

Here is terminal report that came up:

Something is not right with that. macOS "Big Sur" should incorporate Safari version 16.3: About the security content of Safari 16.3 - Apple Support includes its build number.

The reason that Mac has a completely unknown and likely obsolete version of Safari is a mystery. Reinstalling macOS is justified. Refer to Reinstall macOS - Apple Support, or Update to the latest version of Safari - Apple Support.

Safari is crashing when attempting to preload the Santander bank website. Of course it shouldn't do that. Having examined the Santander website on the Mac I happen to be using at the moment I can find nothing that should cause that to occur.

This seems to be a rather common complaint. Although there have been alleged fixes (clear Safari's cache and history) you already did that to no effect.

Add one more suggestion: Go to Safari's Preferences... menu > Search, and de-select each of the choices next to Smart Search Field. There are four of them. Try one at a time, or all of them. Test.

'Include Safari Suggestions' unticked avoided the problem. I am happy leaving this as unticked unless it's important. So why did the problem suddenly appear (the last Safari update?)

I would rather not have ANY data stored relating to my online banking. Which is why I clear Safari history before I close (I wish I could set it to do that auto but appears not!)

Are we there now? If so can my data sent be deleted? Await advisement. Many thanks.

Overall clunkiness is normal in Safe Mode. One more thing to try before giving up and handing the problem over to Apple Support: Consider downloading and running EtreCheck and posting its report in a reply to this Discussion. Instructions and a download link can be found in Old Toad's illustrated User Tip, here: How to use the Add Text Feature When Posting Large Amounts of Text, i.e. an Etrecheck Report - Apple Community.

Run EtreCheck after restarting your Mac normally.

You already went above and beyond all reasonable troubleshooting in an effort to fix the problem, and I suspect you may need to contact Apple Support, here: Contact - Official Apple Support.

At the very least Apple will be able to screen share with you (with your consent, of course) and they may be interested in collecting diagnostic data for their engineers. The Console warning you included is intended for their use — it's something Apple needs to fix.

The EtreCheck report may reveal something you can act upon, or not. Post it here. EtreCheck does not collect or display any personal information, does not alter your Mac in any way, and does not affect its performance except when it is actually running. You can just drag its app icon to the Trash when you're finished with it.

Whichever Search engine I use if I type 'san' it closes unexpectedly (that's the panel that comes up.) If I put in any other comb of sxx it seems OK. Maybe others I don't know.

If you want me to try anything else let me know.

Update. If I click 'Reopen' at top of panel Safari restarts but Terminal kicks in with that stuff I showed earlier (I redacted a lot of it as it seemed to repeat and I did not want to give away sensitive info.)

Thanks.

It said Safe Mode in red upper right just before I logged on. After that it did not say Safe Mode on top right but machine was very jerky.

Problem remains. Also if I type say xxx the type 'san' at the front and then delete the xxx Safari still shuts down. What a little rascal its become!

Thanks for staying with this.

PS just installed 16.4.1. Same problem.

Yes.

Not sure what you mean by data sent; if you mean the EtreCheck report, it's harmless. It does indicate that Mac's battery needs to be replaced, but that is unrelated to the problem at hand.

So why did the problem suddenly appear (the last Safari update?)

It's clearly something Apple needs to fix. No matter what website data Safari uses to populate its Suggestions, it should not result in a crash.
