As it turns out when a passcode is forgotten then the iPhone has to be erased to get back into the phone. If you still have cool down time as in the phone says something like "try again in 10 minutes" then I would try to guess the passcode. If the phone says iPhone disabled or unavailable then you will have to erase it If you forgot your iPhone passcode - Apple Support
