Merging duplicate photos iPhone feature

Not sure if this question was asked, but when I’m merging duplicate photos in my photos library (using the new merge feature), I know it keeps the best quality one (eg 2 MB vs 300 KB, for example), and I’m pretty sure it retains the one with specific features (eg keeps the one marked as a “favorite” as opposed to the one that hadn’t been), but does anyone know if it keeps the one that’s in an album? My photos are hyper-organized into about 1,500 albums, and I don’t want the merge feature to remove the photo that also sits in an album (as opposed to the duplicate that may or may not be in an album). Thanks.

Jeff.

Just to confirm - I merged two pairs of photos with the duplicate versions in different albums, and the surviving, merged photo appeared in both albums.

But cannot find a pattern yet, what will happen with edited versions when merging . In one case Photos kept the edited version, in the other case, Photos kept the original version, without adjustments applied.
