AppleTV remote acting strange - vol up/down doesn't work now

My AppleTV (late 2018) is updated to latest tvOS, but my remote is funny - the AppleTV recognizes all buttons from 3-4m away, except volume up/down; but if I get the remote within about 10cm of the AppleTV, the volume works. The remote is fully charged.
