I have the old Apple TV if I get a new remote will it work on my Apple TV

Depends on how old (which exact model). Identify your Apple TV model - Apple Support
Apple TV (4th generation or later) [A1625, A1842, A2169, A2737, A2843] can use the new Siri Remote.
Apple TV (3rd generation or earlier) [A1469, A1427, A1378, A1218] cannot use the new Siri Remote. Instead find an old style Apple Remote (aluminum) A1294. Apple doesn’t sell these anymore, but some resellers may still have a few.
