iTunes thinks my iPhone is new

I just got a refurbished MBP with OS Big Sur 11.7.2. When connecting my iPhone SE (2nd gen) iTunes wants me to set up my phone as new, or back it up from a 2020 backup (of some previous phone). How do I get passed this? I would like to back up my phone (photos, files, etc.) on the computer.

Hello elisabet17,

You can select as new in and you will be able to use your device as expected, as it is now. The device will not be formatted unless you follow these steps: Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support

With macOS Big Sur you will manage content on your iPhone via Finder: Use the Finder to sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod with your computer - Apple Support

Take care!
