Why are animated gifs not showing up inline in iOS mail - now show 'click to download'?

It seems now when someone sends me an email with an animated gif inline (say, an animated email signature) that all of a sudden it shows in mail on my iphone as 'click to download' instead of automatically loading & displaying the gif. (This is a new problem!) Any idea how to get gifs to load automatically?
