Music on iPod nano shows up under Apple Music but will not play

My music is on my iPod nano, I connect to my MacBook Pro with MacOS 11.7.1 and launch Apple Music.

Apple Music shows the iPod Nano as a connected device, as well as the music library (songs) thereon but cannot play any songs straight from the iPod.

I saw earlier posting to change sync settings to manual but still not able to click on a song on ipod and play or even see the playlist and play the playlist.

Ideas?

Some features of iTunes have not be carried over to the new Music app. In particular it is no longer possible to play the contents on a connected device, even when manually managed. See Recover media from an iPod - Apple Community for advice on pulling your media into the local library. FWIW it is never a good idea to rely on a portable device as the only repository for your music, too easily lost, stolen, damaged, or in need of a restore, and then you lose all that is on it and nowhere else.
