iCloud for Windows slows down both OneDrive and iCloud Photos

Have been using both OneDrive and iCloud for Windows on my laptop computers successfully for years. Recently I found that my new (<1 year old) computer was VERY slow to open OneDrive folders. Same experience opening iCloud Photos folder. In fact, sometimes when I attempt to open one of the folders (both OneDrive and Photos) nothing opens at all.

I uninstalled iCloud for Windows and OneDrive behaved normally. I then re-installed iCloud/W and the issue has returned.

This does not occur on my other older (>6 years) laptop.

Very disappointing if iCloud/W has an issue but to "infect" OneDrive is truly sad.

Hard to imagine there's anything to be done about this other than provide this information to the Apple feedback black hole. But any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you!

We appreciate you clarifying this for us, Joe,

Are you able to recreate the same behavior in a new user account on your PC? If you need help to set up a new user account on your PC, we suggest that you reference your Microsoft documentation to do so.

Also, check out the additional troubleshooting steps outlined here to determine if this applies: If your iCloud Photos aren't loading on your PC - Apple Support

If you still need help, we would suggest that you contact Apple directly to investigate this further with you. You can reach them here: Apple Support

Kind regards.

Hey Joe Reach,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you've tried some great steps so far. The issue is narrowed down quite a bit with your troubleshooting. Next, try the same thing with OneDrive as you did with iCloud. Remove it and see if there are any issues. Do any other apps have similar issues when iCloud for Windows is installed? That may help pinpoint this as well.

It may also help to check for updates to both apps. As far as iCloud for Windows, the guidance in Set up and use iCloud for Windows - Apple Support can help you check for updates.

Take care.

Hi Miche11e_P

Thank you for the further suggestion to narrow this down.

Created a separate user account on the PC. Same issue there.

Like most Apple support articles this is not helpful and it has out-of-date information.

I just think this is yet another in a long line of iCfW bugs. I've abandoned iCloud Drive in Windows as it has lethal bugs. Time to decide if I should abandon iCloud for Windows altogether or contact Apple to try to resurrect it.

Thanks again,

Joe

Hi faith185

Thank you for your suggestions.

I removed OneDrive, re-installed iCloud for Windows and have the same issue: the Photos folder appears but will not even open. The "thinking" mouse just spins for a while.

Do any other apps have similar issues when iCloud for Windows is installed?

No other network-intensive apps have an issue. Web browsing is fine and I have an email client and it is fine.

It may also help to check for updates to both apps. As far as iCloud for Windows, the guidance in Set up and use iCloud for Windows - Apple Support can help you check for updates.

As far as I can tell, there is no way to check the version of iCfW, is no way to know if iCfW automatically updates, and no way to "ask" it to check for updates.
