Are you connecting your SSD via USB-C hub?
Some reports have been seen of issues with some USB-C hubs not being recognised by the iPad after update to iPadOS16.1. The common factor, to date, is that the affected USB Hubs are not explicitly stated as being compatible with iPad by the hub manufacturer.
A forced restart of your iPad may be helpful - as this will often clear a post-update software or performance issue:
- On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
- On other iPad models: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.
