System Data is 330 GB on New iMac 24, why?

Why does System Data take up 1/3 the space of my storage? The iMac 24 is new and only has my photo library, which uses 320 GB, installed. The iMac 24 came with 1TB storage, but now is has only 278 GB free space. Why? Why is System Data (330 GB) using up so much space and what is it?

systems data is taking up most of my storage I have a Mac with just 120GB of storage. i keep my music and photos on an external hard drive because i don't have enough space for them on the Mac, so i have just 20-30GB of storage on my Mac- applications, mail and some documents. however, i'm constantly getting warnings that my disk is full and it shows 90GB+ in systems storage. it seems that my computer thinks the photos are saved on the Mac even though they definitely are not. any solutions? there is nothing wrong with this Mac otherwise, and i'd like to get a few more years use of it, but it has become pretty useless with the constant warnings...

System Data showing over 600GB My Mac doesn't have a lot of free space- which makes no sense at all. I have almost everything on external hard drives. Today, in an effort to save space, I moved my iMovie library and my Final Cut Pro library to my externals as well (containing a total of 100GB), and it did not free up any space on my Mac. This makes no sense.

Restart in Safe Mode followed by a normal startup
Turn off Time Machine, wait for it to delete local snapshots then turn back on
Go to Apple Menu > About this Mac > Storage > Manage and follow the recommendations
