iPhone carrier lock
Purchased iPhone from private party and I do not know what carrier this device is locked out of so I can request it to be unlocked. Does apple have a way to know what iPhone was assigned or made for which carrier?

If the SIM card you have works to send and receive calls, then either the phone is locked to that carrier or the phone was unlocked from the original carrier and now works with any SIM card. Are you having a problem with different SIM cards from different carriers?
If your phone is carrier locked and your current SIM card works, then I would ask that carrier if they have it locked in their system.

Thank you but the network it gives me is from my SIM card carrier and not what was the original carrier.
Basically yes. I have had several unlocked iphones before so I know it is not unlocked but I just don't know what carrier the previous owner had for service and am not able to ask him.
