Shift to the route overview at any point in your trip.

It will generally show 3 or 4 alternate routes from which you might choose.

These these alternate routes change as you progress toward your destination.

Sure:

Maps is smart but it doesn’t yet incorporate ALL the “local knowledge” of area residents.

When you first enter your destination you are presented with an overview of suggested routes.

So you pick one, the “navigation” screen opens and you’re on your way.

At any point along your route you can switch to the overview by clicking on the icon of 2x circles connected by a S-shaped line.

That will give you new alternate routes based on your THEN actual position.

Pick one and continue.

Repeat as often as desired.

Could you be a bit more specific as to what to do? I’ve tried this countless times and have never seen alternate routes other than when I first put in a destination. What I have to do is end the route and start over again. To my knowledge, that’s what everyone (I know) using Apple Maps has to do.
