Turning off magnetic iMovie timeline

How do I keep iMovie's timeline from being magnetic--how do I get the footage to stay exactly where I put it and not snap toward the previous footage?

You can’t. The magnetic tmeline is built into the software. You can insert a background clip as a spacer. Or, you can put your clips into the upper timeline where they can be freely moved and positioned.
