"bring iphone near airtag" doesn't work

I have a couple of airtags. when my wife uses the car, she always gets the "airtag is tracking you" message, which is good. What's bad is it then will prompt (if we desire) to "Bring airtag near iphone" to get more info. Nothing happens when we do this, however.

Another problem is that I can't track the airtag, it's always no found. Doesn't matter if one of us is at home on the internet and the other is in a crowded shopping center, it just doesn't work. I read that other iphones need to be around, and there certainly must be in these scenarious. Do I have a bad batch? Misconfigured? I've tried redoing everything (reconnecting, assigning airtag a to person a, etc). No joy.

It seems that the information is rather limited on troubleshooting this.

Hey there AppleBoy123,

If you haven’t already, reset your AirTag as this could resolve the issue you're describing. Here's how to reset your AirTag:

  1. Press down on the polished stainless steel battery cover of your AirTag and rotate counterclockwise until the cover stops rotating.
  2. Remove the cover and the battery.*
  3. Replace the battery.
  4. Press down on the battery until you hear a sound. This sound means that the battery is connected.
  5. When the sound finishes, repeat the process four more times, removing and replacing the battery, then pressing down on the battery until you hear a sound. You should hear a sound each time you press on the battery, for a total of five sounds. The fifth sound is different from the previous four. This indicates that the AirTag is now ready to pair.
  6. Replace the cover by aligning the three tabs on the cover with the three slots on your AirTag.
  7. Press down on the cover.
  8. Rotate the cover clockwise until it stops rotating.
