“Gifting” the cost of new MacBook Air as a surprise for daughter.

Help! I wish to surprise my daughter for her birthday with available funds to make her own personal selection of a new MacBook Air when it becomes available. Advanced ordering would never be an option she would consider. A trip to a local Apple retail store would be mandatory. Any suggestions on the best way to make this possible?

You might consider purchasing an Apple Gift Card and giving this to her for her birthday.

Write a check, use a credit card, cash ... call the store and ask them what they do and don't accept.

If it were my daughter, and it has been once for a notebook, be prepared to buy accessories and such: portable HDD to backup to, portable storage maybe, a carry case (not a cover you attach) and any of several others. I personally would expect to spend $2,000US. Any left over would be hers to blow. $2k is plenty for a really nice machine plus extras

Just don't buy the smallest disk ... 512GB seems to be the sweet spot.
