Change apple ID on a mac to an existing apple ID

My work mac currently has a different AppleID to all of my personal Apple devices. I would like to change my mac's ID to match my personal devices so i can enable Handoff.

I've tried to do this on the "Change you AppleID" page but I get an error saying the email address is already in use. I have removed the personal AppleID as the rescue email address but still no success.

You cannot change the work AppleID to use the primary email address of your personal AppleID as that email is currently in use as an AppleID. Change your AppleID only allows you to change the existing primary email for an AppleID with a new email address that is not in use as an AppleID.

What you can do is sign the work AppleID out of all services on the Mac (iCloud, messaging, FaceTime, the App, book and music stores) and then sign in with your personal AppleID and use it on the Mac.

Enter the Apple (iCloud) ID, and click Forgot Password. See if you can get a Rescue or Notification email option. Link to contact Apple Support at the end of the 2nd article.

If you have 2 Factor Authentication enabled, if you can't recover the password using the steps above, you will need to use Account Recovery. The Recovery Process is an automated process and the length of time it takes can vary a lot. Apple ID Support can only answer your questions. They can't intervene in or speed up the process. The article below has some suggestions to shorten the time the process takes.
