I am no longer able to open file attachements in mail by double-clicking on the attachment. Instead I have to grant permission to the app to access the file in a cryptic mail directory. Why is this happening out of the blue? Never happened before, currently OS11.6.6 BigSur. What is the solution?
The file was an adobe acrobat file. Acrobat was already open on my desktop when I tried to open the attachement. Quitting acrobat enabled the file attachment in mail to be opened by double-clicking the file attachment. Looks like a bug in 11.6.6 as this is happening in outlook also! Fix it SJ.

If you are using a an adobe acrobat reader to open the files instead of preview, you can try checking if the app needs an update. You also have tje option uninstall and reinstall it. And test again if the issue persists or not.
Try restarting the mac as well
