Exporting Effects as an Alpha?

Has anyone tried to just export an Effect - without the image or clip - as an alpha channel,

so that it could be used with other media?

There is one under STYLIZE called SKETCH (animated erratic lines).

There must be a way other than animating from scratch.

Thank you.

I am not sure what that would even mean.

An effect modifies the clip to which it is applied. It does not have pixels of its own that you might export...

You can try applying it to something - maybe a generator (white, or black), and see if that provides the thing you have in mind.

Please clarify.

Sorry, I mentioned the white background without much thinking.

Now that I looked into this, it stands to reason that you need something to sketch on - a solid color won't do anything.

Do you have Motion?

If you do, you can open a copy in Motion. The effect contains a quicktime movie inside. Maybe that is something you can use.

If you then import that back into FCP, and set the blend mode to overlay, it seems that it would work.

In Final Cut Pro, control-click the effect in the Effects browser and choose Open a Copy in Motion (if the effect is one those built-in to FCP) or Open in Motion (if it is a thirty party effect).

Then save the modified effect, with a new name and a category. I suggest you create a new category, so that your modified effects all appear grouped together in FCP.

I recommend that you take some time to watch Mark Spencer’s free video about learning Motion in under 60 minutes- it will teach you a lot and help you better understand the workings if Motion and how it is so useful for FCP.
