My footage is a OBS stream:
Frame rate mode: Variable
Frame rate: 30.000 FPS
Minimum frame rate: 29.412 FPS
Maximum frame rate: 30.303 FPS
When I import that mp4 into FCP, the frame rate shows as 29.41 fps however I would prefer 30 fps for my project.
What would happen to the clip when I would set my project to 30fps?
Is this a problem? (dropped or double frames)

Can you post a screenshot that shows that project frame rate? I've never seen the application create a non-stanadard frame rate.
I would not be surprised if there is odd behavior with variable frame rate material. You might try optimizing it, or converting it before importing to 30fps.
You could use Compressor or Handbrake.
Result with "Automatic Speed":
It worked! No missing or double frames any more – it looks just normal.
I unchecked the "Preserve Pitch" option, because IMO it sounded a bit artificial at some points – not that it would be bad, but I prefer the modified pitch (+2% in my case).
I couldn't test "Speed Transitions", because my footage was just one long clip (about 1 hour).
This is not only helpful for OBS/Twitch, but also for Capto recordings in variable frame rates.
Does automatic frame rate work with this?
AFAIK it converts any fps to frame-by-frame with the project fps. I have used that to mix 25 and ~30fps footage to a project (AFAIR preserve audio pitch is automatically selected).

It seems you have answered while I was correcting my question.
Because the clip is 29.41 fps, FCP didn't allow
that non-standard frame rate, and I had to select 30 fps.
So to prevent frame problems what would be better:
optimizing (normally I avoid this due to large file size)
or converting the frame rate – is there a simple & good app?

I checked the FCP manual and found nothing about "automatic frame rate".
Do you mean "Automatic Speed"? (http://lutslounge.com/retiming-using-automatic-speed-in-final-cut-pro-x/)

"preserve audio pitch is automatically selected" sounds helpful too. I will test it.
I noticed "Speed Transitions" is also checked by default. Which results does this give?
BTW I also read in the FCP manual about "optimizing":

Nothing is mentioned here about a positive influence on deviant frame rates, so I'm afraid this wouldn't help in my case.

Converting the frame rate with these apps will not be possible
without decreasing the video quality I'm afraid...
so for quality reasons I think I will go with optimizing this time.
Surprised you would see quality loss in Compressor.
