my music across my devices
Do I really have to pay Apple to be able to have my own music on all my devices

No, but you have to sync using a cable: Sync your iPhone, iPad or iPod using your computer – Apple Support (AU)

It shouldn't delete your music. Where did the music come from if not through syncing with your Mac? If they are iTunes purchases you can just download them to your other devices. If they are from another source you can't sync from iPad to Mac.
Hi Thanks for your answer.
The fact is that most of the music has been purchased or downloaded directly to the iPhone or iPad. So the library on mAC Mini is not up to date.
It seems Apple is no longer a user friendly company unless you pay them.
See if anything here helps: Recover your iTunes library from your iPo… - Apple Community
So I have to dig out my old MAC Mini that I have not used for years, update it and sync on that? Is there any chance it will delete the music on my phone now?
