Automation created for battery level charge not working

Greetings everybody,

I'll try explain this very easily and make it short, providing all the necessary info:

  • I've created an automation to notify me when the battery reaches 80% when recharging my iphone (option chosen for the aumation: "when battery level is 80%")
  • I always recharge my iPhone with Airplane Mode ON
  • Automation never works: it never triggers when the battery reaches 80%, which means my phone always end up being charged beyond this percentage
  • phone model is iPhone 12 Pro Max running on the latest iOS version

Additional details:

  • the automation actually ALWAYS works when the battery drops down to 80% from any other

percentage above 80%. To better explain:

- battery charge going from 83% to 80%: automation works

-recharging the phone from 40%: automation does not work when 80% is reached

However, I want the automation to work when the phone is being charged and the battery reaches 80%

  • automation worked only once four days ago, when I recharged my iPhone with Airplane Mode OFF; however, when I recharged my iPhone again today (and again with Airplane Mode OFF)

What I want is very simple: I want to know why the automation doesn't work and how to get it to work - that is, it must trigger when the battery reaches 80% while under being recharged

Before you ask:

  • yes, the option "Ask Before Running" is turned off
  • yes, the option "Notify When Run" is turned on

I'll greatly appreciate if anybody can help me fix this.

Thanks in advance for any reply.

Hey there 11Ronin,

Thanks for reaching out in Apple Support Communities!

Let's see if the steps included in the Shortcut User Guide help out: Navigate the action list in Shortcuts on iPhone or iPad. We're suggesting to go to "View all available actions for an app". Follow the instructions and select battery. You want to make sure "Is equal or less than" is set to trigger the shortcut. As a suggestion, it might be best to use these instructions to recreate the shortcut to see if it will work over a few days.

Since you've mentioned 80% battery level, we'd like you to check this out too: About Optimized Battery Charging on your iPhone. It includes the following information:

With iOS 13 and later, Optimized Battery Charging is designed to reduce the wear on your battery and improve its lifespan by reducing the time your iPhone spends fully charged. When the feature is enabled, your iPhone will delay charging past 80% in certain situations.

Although it doesn't resolve the Shortcut issue, it's good to learn about this feature.

Take care!
