how can I use a .mov file in the music app?

The Music app should accept well formed .mov files and treat them as music videos. You can use drag & drop, copy & paste, or File > Add to Library to add the file to your Music library.

Thanks for your reply. The .mov file, which played fine in the Quicktime player and VLC, would not play when imported to the Music app. I should mention that I'm on macOS Catalina, using version 1.06.10 of the music app. I used VLC to concert it to .m4v but that would not play in music either.
OK, it should work in principle, but an individual file might have inconsistencies that cause Music to reject it. Looks like you tried conversion to another format which is what I would have suggested. Not really sure where you go from here.
