Getting Audible directions from Maps on iPhone XR

My iPhone XR is not giving audible directions when I use Apple Maps while driving my car. (Or Google maps, for that matter.) When I tried to follow the link given in the answer on this site, I could not find anything relevant from Apple Support. Without audible directions, driving alone, the app is nearly worthless. Ask me how lost I got in L.A. last week. How can I get it to talk to me?

Here's a follow-up for anyone who might have the same situation. Driving a car whose infotainment system does not support Car Play, I turned off the Directions on Radio switch in my phone, Settings>Maps>Spoken Directions, as suggested by ChrisJ4203. I also disabled Bluetooth. With both of these actions, I was able to get audible directions on the phone itself. For the return trip, I reenabled Bluetooth and paired the phone with my car. This time I heard directions from my car speakers, as long as the phone was not plugged in to the USB charger. The minute I plugged it in, the audible directions disappeared. So, I have a workaround. I just can't be charging my phone when I need directions, nor, I think, can I listen to the radio. Seems like this has to be a car infotainment system-phone interface problem.

Yes, I was paired to Bluetooth when it happened. Somewhere online I saw a suggested "fix" that told me to disable the Bluetooth connection, so I tried that on the way home, but the Maps app still wouldn't talk audibly. Assume I SHOULD be paired to the car via Bluetooth?

In my Settings, yes, I have "Directions on Radio" turned on.

Not sure what you mean about exactly how I am using the device. I open Maps. I plug in my destination. I hit GO.

At one point in my lost wanderings in L.A., I pulled over the the curb to reorient myself and recalculate my route. While I was sitting at the curb, my phone spoke the FIRST direction (a left turn) and I thought HOORAY, I'm good to go, but after I made that turn, it would give me no further audible directions.

When I asked about how you were using the device, I was trying to find out if you were paired via Bluetooth. Not everyone does that. When you have the Maps screen open, you should see a small speaker icon on the map when you are viewing the directions. If it has a line through it, you need to tap on it. You should see a choice of 3 selections, a speaker by itself, which turns on the speaker, a speaker with a small triangle sign beside it, which will only allow for hearing special information, or the speaker with the line through it for mute. Select the speaker alone and it should work. If not, it could be that your vehicle's radio speakers do not support the maps using those speakers. If you turn off the Directions on Radio switch, you should hear the directions on the phone itself.

Thank you, yes, I am aware of the little speaker icon, and the two icons below it. I have always selected the speaker icon, and I double-checked that it was selected (had no line through it) while I was lost. You might be right about the car's speakers being the problem. My car does not have Apple CarPlay. I will try turning off the Directions on Radio switch and see if that solves the issue. Of course I have to be in my car to test it; when I am sitting at home, the directions DO speak on the phone itself. Thank you for your time with this.
