My Apple Watch 6 is set to 'always on', but after I updated to 8.4.2 the screen goes dark a few seconds after I lower my wrist, and it requires a tap to light up. I’ve powered the watch off and back on with no effect.

Problem solved. The watch was placed in theater mode during the update. Canceled theater mode. Problem solved.

Do a forced restart, hold in both buttons, wait for the Apple logo, let go of the buttons.
At first I thought this worked, but then the screen went dark again. Not the solution.
