Can i pair an old Apple Pencil with a new iPad Air?

If it is the original, 1st gen Pencil with the Lighning connector and magnetic cap at the end, then no.

For the new 2020 iPad Air 4, you need to purchase the newest 2nd Pencil.

Both versions of the Pencil pair and charge differently.
