iMovie exports as mp4 but only the audio plays, no video

The video is 30 minutes long, it was exporting as an mp4 file but when i played it only the audio exported. I've changed the setting to the best quality so that it exports as a Mov file but it never finished exporting, it always says its failed. I'm trying to export it onto a 256 gb drive so i know storage isn't the problem. I've reset my macbook, and reset the preference and still no luck.

What format are the clips in the project? HEVC? HDR? Cinematic Mode? An older legacy format, like .avi?

On the available space issue, do you have sufficient free space on your internal drive, where the iMovie app is located, for iMovie to function efficiently? This is different than the available space on the destination drive.

Since you already have tried deleting preferences, you might run though the following procedures to see if any of them solve the issue:

New Project

Copy your media into a newly created project and see if that cures the problem. To do that, do an Edit/Select All, Edit/Copy, of the media in your project and then Edit/Paste it into the newly created project.

Safe Mode

You could also try booting up in Safe Mode (see Finder menu for instructions) and, after everything loads, immediately shut down and reboot in normal mode. Then see if iMovie works properly.

Updating iMovie

To update/redownload iMovie 10, drag your iMovie 10 app from the Applications folder into the trash, but do not empty the

trash. Sign in to the app store and open your purchases folder by clicking on your name at the bottom of the app store side bar.   You will see your purchases displayed, including iMovie 10. Redownload/update iMovie from there. If not successful, drag your present iMovie app out of the trash and return it to the Applications folder.

Resetting the System Management Controller

Not sure if you already have done this, but try resetting the System Management Controller (but no longer available for the new M1 computers):

Resetting the NVRAM or PRAM

Try resetting the NVRAM or PRAM:

Adding to my previous post: You might try running your exported movie through the free download, Handbrake, and see if that gets the video playing.

With one of the clips in the project, convert it to H.264, Mp4/AAC with Handbrake. Do that even if the codec already is indicated to be Mp4/AAC. Re-rendering often cures issues.

You can get Handbrake here:

https://handbrake.fr/

A simple way to do it is to open Handbrake and do a File/Open Source. Navigate to your video and choose it as the source from the resulting screen. Then do File/Start Encoding. Wait a couple of minutes for the conversion to complete. It will convert to Mp4/AAC by default. Then save and import the converted clip into iMovie, and try to share out again.

The MP4 data is expressed as the .mp4 file extension. The capitalization is insignificant.

Open the iMovie-exported movie in QuickTimePlayer. Do a Window/Show Movie Inspector. In the information box that appears, does it show a video format, or just audio? Do the same with one of the clips.

When you run one of the clips through Handbrake, and then import the converted clip into a new iMovie project, will iMovie export it with both video and audio?

iMovie exports as mp4 but only the audio plays, no video
